To advance in the hiring process, all candidates must successfully complete the Doña Ana Fire Rescue Physical Ability Test (PAT). This test includes a series of physically demanding tasks designed to reflect real-life scenarios that firefighters regularly face in the line of duty.

Practice PAT Sessions:
Doña Ana Fire Rescue offers public Practice Agility Test sessions to help candidates prepare. These sessions are held at:

  • 1430 Portland Drive, Las Cruces, NM 88007

• Schedule:
  • July 6 & 7, 2025
    
    • Morning Session: 7:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
    • Evening Session: 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Requirements for Participation:

• Must be 18 years of age or older
• Must complete a waiver prior to participating
• Must wear appropriate athletic attire

Candidates who pass the Physical Ability Test will move on to the Written Exam. This entry-level firefighter exam is designed to assess basic aptitude and skills essential for success in the fire service. No prior fire service experience is required to take the exam. Further details, including the date, time, and location of the exam, will be provided to qualifying candidates. 

Candidates who successfully complete the Written Exam will proceed to the EyeDetect screening. EyeDetect is a non-invasive, computer-based technology used to support the background investigation process. This step helps ensure the integrity of those advancing in the selection process.

Candidates who pass the EyeDetect screening will be invited to participate in a panel interview. The interview is designed to assess a candidate’s motivation, readiness and overall suitability for a career with Doña Ana Fire Rescue. 

Candidates who are successfully selected following the interview will undergo a comprehensive background check. This investigation verifies employment history, education, criminal record, driving record, and other relevant information to ensure candidates meet the high standards of Doña Ana Fire Rescue. 

Candidates who successfully pass the background investigation will be scheduled for a comprehensive medical evaluation. The medical exam ensures that each candidate meets the physical and medical standards required to safely perform the duties of a firefighter.

Candidates who successfully complete all previous steps will be invited to begin training at the Doña Ana Fire Rescue Academy.
